Three Ways to Beat the Winter Blues

1. Maximize sunlight exposure. Open those curtains! Can you move your favourite chair closer to a window? Natural light alleviates winter blahs and is known to impact a person’s mental health in a very positive way. Try light therapy if you don’t have natural sunshine coming into your living space this time of year. Light therapy lamps are engineered to imitate natural sunlight to maintain serotonin levels, the “happy chemical” that naturally occurs with light. Therapy lamps help boost energy and improve sleep patterns, with 20 to 30 minutes of use each day. If you are interested in trying light therapy, call us to discuss your options. We have several models available for purchase.
2. Eating well and vitamin supplements. Vitamin D is called the “sunshine vitamin” for good reason. Vitamin D helps regulate calcium and phosphorus in the body and plays a role in maintaining proper bone structure. Vitamin D is made in the skin when exposed to sunlight and may regulate mood and reduce depression. People who don’t get enough sun exposure and are over the age of 65 are at risk for deficiency. Foods high in vitamin D include fatty fish, dairy, and egg yolks. Many foods are commonly fortified with vitamin D including cereals and orange juice, and capsule and therapeutic drops are for sale in most of our local pharmacies and health food stores.
3. Exercise. If the weather’s too inclement for outside exercise, develop a safe indoor routine, starting with comfortable stretching. Resistance band workouts or light weight training is especially beneficial when led by a knowledgeable coach, so participants don’t strain joints or muscles. Start with no weights or very light weights to begin with until you’re used to the routine before adding weights. Light weight training is proven effective for bone health and improves posture, mobility, and balance.
