What is rheumatoid arthritis?

RA (rheumatoid arthritis) is an autoimmune and inflammatory disease that causes painful swelling in affected areas, mainly the joints. The specific causes of RA are unknown, but some factors increase the risk of developing the disease, such as increased age and genetics. Smoking also increases the risk of developing RA and can worsen symptoms, which range from pain and stiffness in the joints, to weight loss and fatigue. RA can be diagnosed by your physician after a symptoms review, exam, x-rays and lab work. Early diagnosis and treatments suppress and control inflammation to reduce the damaging effects of RA, so it’s important to seek medical advice if you suspect onset. If diagnosed, RA can be managed with prescribed medication, and a healthy lifestyle. Regular physical activity, such as walking for 30 minutes a day, maintaining a healthy weight, and smoking cessation all help alleviate the pain and discomfort of RA.
